What do you use? For me it's the old standby, 3in-one oil, but I can't help think that maybe there's something better...

Re: Fishing reel lubricants?

I used to know an old man.......I guess he's long dead now, but he used to suppliment his meager income by making cast nets and repairing old rods and reels. He used a lubricant that was derived from wintergreen. He called it wintergreen oil, but I don't remember what it was really called. I remember that he used it because it was so thin and slippery that it would penetrate better than WD40 and the like, and stay slippery longer. He could disassemble a salt and oxidation encrusted old Roddy Reel useing his wintergreen oil without damaging any of the screws that held it together. When he was done with his work he would apply this oil to all screws and moving parts as he reassembled the reel. I still don't know what exactly he used, but the closest thing I have found is the Marvelous Mystery Oil.

I use the combination pack of reel oil and grease from Walmart. Don't remember the name of it. I like grease on the gears of my heavy saltwater reels.

Re: Fishing reel lubricants?

WD40 is a marvelous product, but is not a satisfactory lubricant. Its name is an acronym for "Water Displacement, 40th attempt," even shows that it was intended for other purposes.
It's main purpose in the PacNW is as a fish lure: it works great on salmon lures and sturgeon bait.
Try Rem Oil. A little pricey, but I seem to recall that one of the gun magazines found it to be pretty good on expensive firearms, and I use it on my fresh water reels.
On my salt water reels, I use a combination of Rem Oil and boat trailer hub/axle grease.

On the subject of reel lube: have you guys used Reel Magic? I bought a can, and it smells exactly like my silicone spray lubricant. Are they one in the same, and if so, will the silicone work as a lubricant?

For the internal moving parts I use Moble One, or any synthetic oil. You can't beat it for lubrication. For external protection of reels I use Turtle Wax. Hey if its good enough for my chevy its good enough for my reels.

Seriously though you can't just lub your reels and expect it to last forever. I fish saltwater almost everyday. My gear gets a fresh water wash down after each trip. About once a month, sometimes more often, everything gets washed with mild soap and water, the reels get broken down cleaned with alcohol/WD-40 and lubed. All external metal on the reels and the rod seats gets waxed.

I have several revolving spool reels (Penn 4/0's, & 6/0's and Mitchell 600's & 624's) that are 25+ years old that are still in good shape. They show wear but no rust or corrusion. Some parts have been replaced of course but its still the same basic reel that it was when I bought it.

Hi -

My father always used plain ol' Vaseline on our reels - Mitchell 300-306-308's, Pflueger Capitols & Sea Kings, & Penn Conventional & Spinning reels (the green ones). Every six months they'd get torn town & cleaned & re-greased. I've more recently become a fan of LubriPlate on the gears, & some flavor of silicone lube for the handles, and for the line rollers on spinning reels.

Slick-50 is a great fishing reel lubricant. It never gums up even at low temps. I also use it on my shotguns for lubrication

try the Hot Sauce - but don't get any of that 3 in 1 oil on the bearings of your baitcast reels - it slowed mine down something awful!
