Re: Fishing age

I would start them out whenever you feel its time. The only thing is their attention span will be short so if the fish are not biting you will have some issues so bring some toys as a back up. I would start out at a farm pond etc. that has a populatin of sunfish/ blue gils. The action will be plenty and fun for them and sure to get them hooked into it, but then again I would give that about 10 minutes and they would rather walk around in the mud at the younger ages.

Also "dad" if you take you younger child fishing it is very unlikely you will get any quality fishing time in for yourself. Young children with fishing poles = high maintenance. But in the end it will be well worth it and will leave memories forever.

Re: Fishing age

I'm going to guess I was around 5 y.o.
My son threw his first line at around 6-7 y.o., grandson about the same.
The hook part always scares me. Can't tell you how many times me and my friends "caught" one another as young tykes. It's like "hot"...gotta learn the hard way to grasp the full implication.

Re: Fishing age

I think I was about 5 years old when I first went fishing. Was with my dad in the town where he grew up and wanted to go to the river and take me fishing. Of course he needed his license first. All I remember of that day was the lady behind the counter saying that their were a lot of snags in the river at that point (must have been high and catching debris). My young mind had no clue what a snag was. When we got to the river I convinced myself they were river monsters and I was WAY to scared to catch one. I think I threw out only a couple of casts. My dad could never figure out why I didn't want to fish and never really tried to take me out again until I finally told him the story when I was about 13 years old. Now we all get a good laugh out of it and of course I LOVE fishing.

Re: Fishing age

Here in ontario you can have a rod in the water for every person in the boat.So I had my daughter out fishing since she was 6 months old.But I think the first time she tried to reel in a fish she was about 3 or 4.She is now 7 and a pretty accomplished fisherwoman.I suggest a closed face reel to start ,they are alot easier for kids.I let her go down on my dock to practice casting with a rubber casting lure (no hooks) And she has a blast.Good practice for the real thing. When they learn it young ,I think it stays with them for life,It did fo me.

Re: Fishing age

I started fishing off my grandpas dock at like 3 when id go down on the weekends at like 5 I started going on the boat.

Now I have 2 younger nephews I take with me on the boat it really irritates me because they beg me to go for days or weeks and then when I give in and take them with me (I go fishing at least once a week) 2 hrs one way to the Delta and 10 mins in the water how long are we gonna stay 15 mins I'm bored when are we going, 20 mins I'm getting a bald spot and a bleeding lip from pulling my hair out and biting my lip as to not cuss them.

Re: Fishing age

Do as I did Calhere, I have a son who is now almost 11 y.o. He would fuss if I did not take him, then 10 minutes out if the fish were not jumping into the boat he was done. I asked him to bring along his portable game (gameboy, PSP, or something similar). When he got bored he would play the game and I could fish.
