not sure if this is the right place for this post...but here it is...not sure where else I would put it.

Want a fishfinder, never had one.

Dont want to spend more than 200. Looking at Humminbird 570 vs 718...any advice?

Those both look fine. Really depends on what you want to do with it. That size screen is good, but color really helps in my opinion. But color adds $$$. There are a few color units in your range, just smaller screen. Check basspro, cabelas, boemarine.com. I just got my first from there, good sale.

Re: fishfinder

I used to work with a 575 humminbird ,but as it turned out I hardly ever used the triple frequency, but the twin frequency all the time. In short,I bought a 575 but used it as a 565.
After having seen what a furuno is capable of I changed to Furuno.
It is great to have instant return. To be able to see the downrigger cables and actually seeing real time action instead of just having a picture that scrolls by.If you can get one,Get a Furuno.

Re: fishfinder

What is more important, resolution or color?

In my price range (aroiund 200) I can get really high pixels in B&W or low pix in Color...

If I did go with a furuno, Which would you recomend?

The Humminbird 575 is available on the net for about $200. It has very high resolution and 16 different hues between black and white. With its triple frequency it beats most everything else in the $200 price range.
As for Furuno...think $1000 and up

Re: fishfinder

What do you want the fish finder for; just depth, finding bait, structure, trolling, casting, temperature important, need a speed wheel?

I'm partial to Lowrance and Eagle, never quite liked Humminbird or Garmin.

I was going to get a low end Furuno (4100?) as the price was around $200, but you have to buy the ducer separate, added another $50-100 on the price. I opted for a clearance Eagle Fishmark 480, $120.

I've been using mono fishfinders for years and they fit the bill for me, I really don't need all the bells and whistles on the color units. I really like the "side-finder" unit on my jon boat as it marks targets to the L&R, but they don't sell those units any more. The closest they make now (cheap) are sonars that mark below the boat or off to the side,,, but which side? Side scanning would be cool, but I don't have $1500 to drop on a sonar.
