I am a newbie to this board. I have an Alumacraft 14' fishing boat with a 20HP motor. I want to add a fish finder. My motor is manual start so I don't have a battery. I see most of these units are fused at 3 AMPS. I can't seem to find any specs on current draw. I would like to use a small gel cell to power the fishfinder. Any suggestions?

If it's going to be the only thing you'll hook to the battery, one option you might want to look into is one brand, I think Eagle, makes some portable models that come with a base that you put 8 AA batteries in. The unit itself is the exact same thing as a model they offer that your would hook to a 12V battery. That will save you from having to buy a 12V battery. They don't draw much power, so the AA batteries do last quite a while. We have one of these for when we use the neighbors' boat.

There's another brand, I think it's Bottomline, that makes basically one piece fishfinders that you just clamp on the side of the boat. The screen is above the clamp and at the bottom is the transducer. They also run off of alkaline batteries, but I'm not sure what size or how many.

Even if you went with a regular fishfinder, you could probably get some parts from Radioshack to basically make an 8 battery box for either C or D size. It would put out 12V and be enough to power a small fishfinder.

Dont use disposable batteries - Not very green :) And EXPENSIVE!

The most common little SLA is the 7 AH 12VDC security and UPS battery. These easily charge and cost about $12.00 each

Take two - I'm sure they would last for at least 5 hours. 14 amp hours - say 2 amp load = 7 hrs and with a 3 amp load = 4.5 hours.

My guess is more around 1.5 amp = 9.3 hrs

How long do you fish for?

I bought a Eagle Cuda 242 last season for my tinny. I had it hooked up to a lawn tractor battery. it ran it all summer on one charge.

Re: Fishfinder Power

My plan was to get a gel cell. Sounds like that will work. If I get 5+ hours per charge that would be fine. I do know you don't want to draw a gel cell down too low.

Thanks for all the help.
