Hello All,

I'm currently restoring an '85 boat with a a Mercruiser 170 and I believe it has an MR outdrive.

I had a few questions about removing the outdrive. After searching for removing outdrives, this is what I have gathered. It has to be in first in order to remove it from the motor, can i just turn the prop counterclockwise to put it in first? I saw that somewhere, but not sure if it will work for mine and the throttle/shifter was removed at the upholsterer's shop and I don't have it at my house with the boat.

Any other tips or pointers in removing an outdrive and motor for the first time restorer are appreciated.

Thank you.

Put it in forward, remove 6 nuts and trim rams, pull drive off.

Thanks thumpar. I don't have the throttle/shifter attached, how do I put it in fwd? Can I just rotate the prop ccw?

If the lower shift cable still works, just shift it by hand (pushing the cable in) while someone turns the prop. It just needs to get the shift shaft aimed forward so they will slide apart.

Perfect, thanks Don S, I'll give that a try.

I love the iboat forums, there are so many people here that are willing to help out.

Hope that everyone's projects are going well and happy boating!
