This is my first time on one of these forums and I am a bit confused. I have been trying to find a forum site that can help me with a water pump repair problem on my 1998 Mercury three cylinder 40 hp outboard motor. I am not sure if I am yet in the right place for this. If not forgive me but if someone could point me in the right direction I would truly apppreciate it.

Respectfully,
Louis

Hi Louis, you're definately at the right place.

A so-called "water pump" replacement is, most of the time, an inadequate term as only the moving part of it, the impeller (rubber star-like thing), need to be replaced, unless you use your engine in saltwater and the complete pump housing is completely shot.

Anyway, this is a pretty easy straightfoward job to do. Something that can be done in a driveway without specialized tools.

As an other members's asking, could you please tell us why did you want to change it: preventive maintenance (good) or lack of cooling water (bad)? Then, we'll be able to guide you step-by-step if you need so.

Better then, if you plan to work a bit by yourself on your engine (wich is a VERY good thing, cause you'll learn a lot), i strongly suggest that you get at least a copy of a generic (Seloc/Clymer) manual, wich is quite good for basic maintenance (it will pay for itself very quickly) or, if you plan to dig deeper into your engine, a specific OEM manual (Service Factory manual).

Cmon, be nice!!!!

You are in the right forum. Im not sure if you can now but a better fitting title will get you more help.
The first thing you need is to get the repair manual for the motor. Replacing a pump is an easy thing if you are mechanically inclined.

But be aware that working on these engines can be addictive!

Like my wife like to said "Now, instead of having a dead anchor, you have a smoking noisy anchor"

Stick around and hang your hat. You will find if you check back posts you may find your answer from some one elses question.
