Re: First time out with new to me boat.

drive camp,
Nice rig, Bud!
A lot of great advice from this post. Might I add just a couple or three or four??
1st, although my boat is a little larger than yours (but still small by all standards) and I have a lot more freeboard (how much room there is between the top of the sides & the water), I'm an advocate of wearing PFDs until you get a good idea on how your rig handles in all types of weather, chop, conditions, etc.
2nd, sign-up for a Coast Guard Auxilliary boating course. Costs $30 for the material, takes 9 weeks @ 1 2-hr session per week, and the knowledge gained is immeasurable. I highly recommend...
Third, make a list of, and carry, all the safety gear recommended by the US Coast Guard. And a first aid kit can come in pretty handy.
Lastly, and most important, is TAKE YOUR TIME. Not rushing, having a plan, executing your plan, and studying the consequences of your moves ahead of time will save you weeks of grief and years of tears.
Happy Boating, Newbie! (and I mean that in the kindest terms possible!)
BrianFD

Re: First time out with new to me boat.

Well guys with the great advice I was getting I got the need to at least try the boat. So I took it to my private lake I fish at my dads. TO make sure it floats. :D Well it does. Yeah!!! I also took ahold of my foot controlled trolling motor. It too was awesome, fish finder awesome. I even broke her in and caught my first fish out of her. Man thats awesome. The boat is so stable in the water compared to anything I have ever fished from its unreal. I can stand on the edge of the boat and not even put he boat down 2 inches from where it was before. The lake is rather small but I couldn't resist seeing how the motor did in actual water. Well the cold natured thing did start after a bit if cranking. I let her idle a bit and than slowly put her in gear. Took a little bit forward and let her rip, not literally I gave her some throttle, man does this thing feel like a rocket ship. I made a few small passes on the lake 200 yards and turn around kinda thing. Than decided to let her back to idle and load her back up. But than it happened. it died, did restart but each time I put it in gear and tried to move her again, again it died. Engine bogging down real bad and just dies. Well I guess its off to Mercury boat manual and do some reading, than off to the Mercury forum for some advice, it acts like a timing problem or lack of fuel, if I ease into it real easy it will start to move and than I can get in it, but if I try to hammer down it bogs and dies, Oh the woos of boat ownership, anyway I can still smile. My boat floats and I caught fish,

Matt

WTG Matt, congrats on the first fish!!!

you might just need to clean those carbs up, possibly run a can of DeepCreep in there to loosen up the crud ... or just ease into her, you dont need to do holeshots, lol

but yes indeed, go over those books, take it step by step and youll have one rocket powered bass buggy, good luck with her!

make sure to get a good idea of how deep to put your boat in on the ramp, also to pull it in, try backing up until the finders are about a inch under,,or whatever works best for your boat trailer launch tad

hey, that boat looks awesome. I hopoe to launch a project of my own soon.
I noticed one thing that you said: that you eased it into gear slowly. I have read on this site many times that that is a very bad habit and grinds your clutch dog and mating surfaces, eventually leading to a stage where the boat slips out of gear on its own. Anyway, good luck! Enjoy, Im jealous.

Re: First time out with new to me boat.

Well the big day has finally arrived, I leave at 9 in the morning to head over to ILL. I have fattened up the carbs to hopefully cure my off idle bog and die. Seems to have helped running it in a bucket. Also found the guy I bought it from had left the thrust washer off from behind the prop, got a new one of them, the fuel tank is full, the batteries are charged and the Motorhome has the 1 7/8 ball on it, just waiting to be hitched in the morning. I am not sure if I can sleep tonight anticipating the weekend, but I will try, thanks for all the advice and well wishes, Sunday I will give you a run down and hopefully some pics of my weekend good or bad.

Matt

Matt

Have you left yet? I'll also be at Rend Lake this Saturday(6TH). Look for a Blue Sundancer Toon with a Evinrude and American Flag on the back. Hope the water isn't to dirty after all the rain. Hope to see ya there!

i have nothing to add to this that has'nt been already said, but the paddle thing. in most states your required to have one. be carfull with that beast! very important!: make sure every one is "well seated" if you drop the hammer! because that combo you got there is gonna launch like a missle. good luck with it :)

Re: First time out with new to me boat.

Well everyone I am back from a great weekend. First off let me tell you I am hooked. I had a great time with my new to me boat, I took everyones advice, took it really easy when needed, and opened it up and learned alot about my, aslo learned I need some time behind the wheel to get good with the boat and learn what it likes and needs depending on water conditions. But the boat was flawless all weekend, primed it first start every morning and could restart it and run it near WOT, WOT is way too fast for me right now and maybe forever but I was comfortable with 1/2 throttle out on the lake even in somewhat choppy water. The fishing wasn't that good unless you were fishin for catfish which I don't really care to. But thanks for everyones help, it sure made me feel better putting her in the water for the weekend and trying everything out. Now to find the time to do more of it.

Matt

i to am a newbie, looks like a pretty cool set-up. one thing that no one has mentioned is insurance. find out what your homeowner's policy covers in terms of liability if you don't already have coverage on the boat. i found out what mine covered a few months ago after smacking into another boat on a dock our first time out

you'll feel like all eyes are on you the first few times you launch and retrieve but just take your time and make sure you cover all the bases, enjoy!
