I've been looking to buy a used 2.5 or 3.3 horse power outboard but as this is my first motor purchase I was hoping to get some advice on things to look for. I have heard that a motor run with a poor Oil/fuel ratio means bad news for the power head. Are there any outward indications of this? Any other tips for a first time buyer? Any insight is much appreciated.

You can get a "general" idea of engine condition by doing the following.

1. Do a compression test. The cylinders (if it's a 2) should be within 15% of each other.

2. Remove the lower lube (fill) screw on the lower unit. The lube should be honey colored and not milky or black.

Sorry, #3-put it in a tank or gargage can and fire it up. If it starts and runs fine, chances are it's OK.

Happy Hunting!

I would be gun-shy at the concept of buying an engine with only 2 or 3 hours on it. The reason being, somebody bought that engine, and ran it 2 or 3 hours. Now, it's for sale? Why? Did it grenade on the original owner due to low oil delivery? Was it rebuilt? Was it rebuilt by a good mechanic to spec?
Was it merely a "Demo", mounted on a hull so folks at the boat show could "test-drive" it?
How would I test drive an engine? WOT, and watch out for the wake LOL.

An engine that has had low or no oil delivery, even for a matter of seconds, has some damage done to it. This is a "given".
Especially if the engine has multiple carbs or injectors for each cylinder. Many multi cylinder engines blow up on one cylinder. This can be caused by no fuel mixture reaching the cylinder, but IS reaching the others. The engine would still run, but lower performance. As it is doing this running, the one jug is dry-- no fuel, no lube, and it grinds to death rapidly.

Djohns has the key to selecting any used outboard laid-out there. But there will allways be questions about it's previous owner, and the way it was treated.
