Eric, That '88 should have a breakerless ignition. No need to "Dwell" on it.

Not to ask dumb questions, but how can you tell if you have a breakerless ignition. I am reading through the service manual for the motor, and the ignition chapter opens up with point adjustiments and dwell adjustments. Best I can tell is that all of this lives in the distributor cap. Would I need to take it apart to find out? Not that I am going to if there is no need, but I just want to know if I would need to think about converting this to a solid-state ignition (conversion kits are on iBoats, and I had looked at them previously when I was considering a boat with a Mercruiser 470 in it).

Remove the Cap and have a look!
Check the Rotor and the Cap itself while you are in there.
Put the Cap back on.

If all of this takes longer than 60 seconds......... ???
