I was 17 in 1975. Dodge 225 slant-six in Mom's 1967 Dart. Head gasket blew, she kept going with no oil pressure. Instead of paying $400 for the overhaul, Dad handed me his 1966 edition of Motor's manual, pointed me towards the roll-around tool chest, and said, "Fix it." Full teardown, sent the block and crank for machining, and then rebuild. Finally got it done and that car stayed on the road at least another 10 years.
