Hi guys - I grew up around boats and am now looking at buying my first.

There is a boat I am looking at buying but there are some small cracks on the back of the boat. Maybe these are a big deal, maybe not.

Could someone knowledgeable offer an opinion based on the attached photo?IMG_00000038.jpg

Thank you in advance.

Re: First Boat

I'm no expert but it looks like the transom has gotten wet. If not rotting yet will be soon, will have to be replaced to be safe.

Thanks guys - a search online for transom rot ended up being rather educational for someone who is just learning about these things.

Appreciate the reply.

Could that have been an impact area (fell off trailer, etc)?

I haven't had a chance to ask how and when that happened but we live in precambrian shield country so there is a higher than average risk of below water impact with rock.

Re: First Boat

It could have been a strike of some sort as it looks like there is some sort of poor repair there. Depending on how long its been that way that transom could be soaked from wicking water.

I'd very wary of a rotten transom along with the rest of the opinions posted above.
