First Aid Kit

My FA kit has always been a tupperware container that I add stuff to and change things out thru the years. Thought about getting a actual kit but most have some much filler in them that doesn't ever get used

Been involved in a couple thru the years that there was things I didn't have so improvised. Possible neck injury, possible broken ankle, lucky never had a bad bleed but do need to get a tourniquet

What do others use/like?

I have an Amazon kit that is in a semi hard case that is zipped

Has cpr kit, super glue, a bunch of bandages, gauge, tape, etc

Also keep a pair of side cutters onboard to cut a hooks if need be

AD you seem to want a kit that actually works. I don't think you can find a markeded package and your piece work with a basic store bought is the way to go..

basic military personal first aid kit would be a good start, add on as needed.

We have an incredibly basic kit (Wally World purchase) in a hard case. Admiral is thinking of getting a tackle box and building her own kit with stuff we need/use. I'd add a very good set of tweezers to it - I bought mine through MicroMark.

This popped up in my YouTube feed this morning, and I watched it: First Aid Kit for boating.

The presenter is on the pro fishing circuit and spends a lot of time in boats. What he says makes sense. He uses a watertight Plano box.

Agree with the earlier statement that those "store bought" kits are a waste. They're better than nothing, but only marginally, IMHO. Best to put your own together.

Also...if you don't go through and check it every so often, say at the beginning of the boating season, then you might be disappointed when you need it. Stuff gets old and expires or loses its usefulness. Alcohol wipes dry out, bandaids lose their stickiness, stuff gets contaminated....

I have a basic kit with bandages, cold pack and other stuff but I add a tube of disinfectant/antibiotic.

Thanks for the input, does seem like what I was thinking, starting with a basic kit and add other stuff as needed is an easy way to start. My current kit is getting so old I should probably toss most of it because of age and just keep the stuff which doesn't have age issues

Yep, no matter what you have aboard, it's a maintenance thing just like engines and drives..at my age a defibrillator would be a priority. LOL

Thanks for sharing the info. I have a basic FAK with bandages, quickclot, betadine, scissors, and suture-free wound closure device. One more thing, it's important to check and maintain the FAK and make sure everything inside is not expired.

I just carry a basic kit with a couple extras we added as my kids and grandkids are in the medical field and made suggestions. But...in all honesty, been a boat owner for over 60 years and can honestly say, I have never had to use any of my first aid kits !!

I honestly can't think of anything in a first aid kit that would be of use during the hour it would take to get home . I have rags and duct tape, you can always improvise a splint or tourniquet . Tourniquet would be the only thing that would possibly be life or death. Anything else is just to keep blood off the upholstery

Gee, A friend of mine had a single item in his first aid kit. It was a wood chistle. He said "I can do anything with that". Not sure I agree with that single proclamation.
