finished my engine stand

I finished my engine stand today and have started checking over the engine (40 evinrude lark 111) One of the first things noted is one spark plug with striped out threads and black oily plugs, not a good sign. The book I purchased has alot of good stuff but was surprised that it has no pictures of this engine. No instructions for taking it apart and pictures showing ALL of the engine components. Im going to get a compression tester later in the week and check this first. I spent 325 on this engine that was garanteed to run but from looking at it I cant see how it did. Oh well a hobby is a hobby .

What manual did you get? Clymers or Seloc? I would invest in an OEM if I were you.

I got the seloc. Its got alot of good info,but limited on the 40 hp lark and I dont regret buying it but it for sure doesnt have everything I need to know. Before I buy one for my 60 Merc I will compare more. If this engine seems beyond my ability to fix I dont need another evinrude manual.
