finding top dead cener

I have a 1973 Johnson v4 i and trying to find top dead center too set the timiing using a dial indicator putting in number 1 cylinder untill it reaches the top and then adjust the mark on the fly wheel is this the correct way to do this ?

I would NOT try to take a reading at TDC, because near the top of the crank's arc there is very little vertical movement of the piston. Probably easier to take readings (or use an piston stop tool) ~10* or more before and after TDC, then split the difference.
