Find impeller location?

I am dragboat guy trying to help a neighbor with a 1978 Evinrude 70 hp. It was stored for 15 years in a barn. I am sure that it was not prepared for storage. When running it in a horse trough, no water comes out of the pee-hole. I assume that the impeller is shot. Where is it located and how do you get it out? Any other sugestions would be appreciated. Boo

The impeller is located on top of the lower unit. There are five bolts (heads facing down). Only four can be seen. The fifth is under the fin looking thing over the prop.<br /><br />You will also need to disconnect the shift linkage under the bottom carburetor.<br /><br />You need a manual.<br /><br /><br /> http://www.outboardrepairs.com/manuals/

FYI, on my 1978 70hp Johnson there are actually 6 bolts holding the lower unit on. The 5 that DJ mentioned and a 7/16 X 4 1/2 long one in front of the "fin looking thing". Also be careful not to let the shift linkage rotate when working on the water pump as this will screw up the adjustment of the linkage.

Could it be the thermostat isn't warmed enough to trigger?

Pee stream should start almost immediatly after engine starts on that motor and after sitting for so long water pump should be rebuilt anyway. Replacing thermostat, rebuilding fuel pump and carbs not bad ideas either. Rubber in fuel pump and carb parts gets hard and brittle after sitting for so long and condition of thermostat is not known. All are relatively cheap and easy to replace. My motor sat for 12 years before I purchased it and even though it ran initially all of these parts were needed to get it reliable and fuel efficient.
