Re: Filleting Fish

If you can make it to the Iboats reuinion"
Don't mean to go off topic, but I've never heard about this. Can you point me to a thread that talks about it?

I think I understand your explanation though.
I only kept like 7 fish today & only 2-3 were bigguns...they were all alive so I let them go. So I had nothing to practice on today....
Oh well. Maybe Tuesday when I go again :p

I fillet like eurolarva described. I don't like to open up the guts if I don't have to. Keeps the meat cleaner I think. Besides I like all the garbage to be in one piece just cause its easier to clean up.

Re: Filleting Fish

I had another question......

I caught several crappie yesterday. While I didn't try out the new technique, after removing the rib bones, there was a line of smaller bones going down the center of the filet.
Are these safe to leave in? To be safe I "V"'d them out.......

Also, after re-re-reading your technique I truely understand how you are doing it euro, will have to try it........

Re: Filleting Fish

My dad always refers to those as pin bones i believe. They are safe to leave in, but i think the filets are easier to eat if you "v" them out, or pick them out at least. Since "v"ing them out i've found little to no bones while eating.

Re: Filleting Fish

Ladyfish and others -- re fillet from the outside. We've been busy so have not had time to check the threads. We are off to the lake on Sat so I'll take some photos of the filleting process and try to post them (if I can figure how to do that). As for skinning fish we used to do that alot with perch (very like your bluegills and panfish. If we happen to get some perch I'll photo that too. Now I just fillet them (only keep the ones 11" or larger) ;)

Well been to the lake and the keepers have their month sealed shut. Lots of throw-backs but no keepers. Sorry no pics yet. We'll try again in the next 2 weeks. (hope hope hope) :( :(

Re: Filleting Fish

Hi again everyone.
Euro. Is this picture similar to your method for panfish?
http://www.titansfan098.com/uploader/bluegill.gif
(it helps if you save the picture to your cpu, clicking again won't do anything, but if you re-load the picture you can watch it again)
Boat's still in the shop so the only fishing I've been doing is in my head & on ebay for fishing stuff :p

Edit. I tried to do the pic but I couldn't get the picture to load right, so I just left it as a link. Right click/save as.

Re: Filleting Fish

Yep skunked again. That is the way I do all my fish. Crappies, bluegills and even walleyss. Man. Got to love the internet. If you look hard enough you can find anything. I got my parts in yesterday and got the lower unit back on the motor. I should do a compression test considering it overheated but what the heck. I would rather be stranded on the lake then in my garage.
