I will be purchasing a new/used boat in the near future and have been told to stay away from Ficht motors? Is this accurate and if so what years and horsepower's should I shy away from and why?
V6 Johnson and Evinrude engines built prior to 2001 with the Ficht direct injection system and NOT updated/upgraded to the Bombardier redesign were very unreliable. I would avoid them at all cost.<br /><br />Engines upgraded to Bombardier specs and Evinrude engines built by Bombardier (2002 and later models) seem to be very good. After the redesign of the system, the name, "Ficht" was dropped. Evinrudes were then called DFI for direct fuel injection.<br /><br />I will move this to General Outboard.<br /><br />Good luck.
