Guys,

I am in the process of finishing up my prep work for my new transom. I still have the outer skin on the boat and just need to replace inner skin with the wood core. I have been doing research on this topic for months now and im still confused. Can someone please explain this process to me in simple terms. I need the following steps!!!
The outer skin is bare only fiberglass- Do i need to put anything on this?

My plywood replacement pieces are cut out- What do I do to these (coat them with epoxy right?) do I also cover them completally with matt? If I do what Oz?

What Kind of glass do I use? Biaxels, matt, woven, tape?????? Too many to understand??

So what Im looking for is a simple list anyone can understand?

Please help I need to get this thing on the water!!!!

THANKS,

STEVE

Re: Fiberglass transom repair

Steve,

Welcome to iBoats. The answers to your questions are detailed in the Restoration Forum here. You can check out my resto link in my signature for some guidance. Here is the short answer:

1. Sand and clean your transom pieces.
2. Glue the wood pieces together with PL premium or other water proof adhesive. Let fully cure.
3. Thoroughly sand/grind the inside of the outer skin and then clean with acetone.
4. Glue the transom in with PL Premium or use resin and two layers of CSM between the wood and the outer skin as the glue. PL is a lot easier to work with.
5. Fill the gap around the edges of the transom with a thicken resin mix (resin, cabosil, milled fibers) and then filet this filling to create a smooth transition to the hull sides and bottom.
6. Completly cover the transom with CSM and out onto the hull at least 6".
7. Completly cover the transom again with 1708 biaxial cloth and out onto the hull sides and bottom at least 10".
8. Depending on the size of your boat you can stop here. If it's 18'+ then you might want to consider repeating 7 above but extend out onto the hull 12".

Great summary. I have to do this someday. Lots of water in there already I found when I installed new tabs. Drip, drip, drip.

Here is a drawing of how I recommend you do a Transom. I recommend Polyester Resin (3Gallons) 1.5 oz CSM mat(4yds) 1708 Biaxial Cloth(4Yds) Cabosil, and Chopped fibers to make Thickened Resin. (1/2 lb each)
