So short version is.... I bought a boat and didn't really check it out thoroughly enough....I am in the process of replacing the floor. The videos and pictures on here have help through the process this far, but now I am to the point where I put the fiberglass over my newly installed and wood and its now going down smoothly. I am not sure what I am doing wrong. I have tried different types of rollers, brushes and even a couple of "engineered" solutions and keep striking out. So my question is.... I have seen many of the restoration on here and they always nice and smooth mine has lost of air bubbles and the fibers from the mat are coming up and look like I through steel wool all over it. what am I doing wrong?

I am using 1.5 oz chopped strand and 3m resin(because it is what I could find locally).

Any suggestions??

Sounds like you need to use a little more resin.

Re: Fiberglass rolling technique???

yep.....and the wet out is crutial....

the 3m resin is more than likely a waxed resin....(you can tell after it cures....is it sticky ? or smooth and hard) sticky is good.

but the resin is not the problem.

as mentioned above....you need more resin...

first off.....if it is unwaxed resin....(sticky after cure) wet out the plywood deck all by it self.
make sure it is good and saturated.....and all the wood changes color to "wet"

then wait a few minits.......let it get tacky ....not hard....but still a little wet...but tacky.

then wet out the area with more resin.....use the fuzzy paint roller....and make sure the area is liberally wet out....
then roll the csm on......take your fuzzy roller and roll the csm into the wet resin....

now add more wet resin to the dry areas.....you want to fully saturate the csm.....
now take your glass roller.....and lightly roll any air out.

this should give you a fully glassed area......

one other tip.....is when you wet out the area (after the first wet out is tacky) to keep turning the fuzzy roller and changing directions.....allmost like a paint brush......really smear that stuff around....

that will give you a good wet out.

for glassing instructions.....read the first few pages of the link in my sig.....it is the most detailed thread on this site for glassing information
