Fiberglass Manufacturer Inquiry

I recently purchased, according to the Title, a 1979 16' Fiberglass boat. The manufacturer listed is "Gareys". Is this for real? I haven't been able to locate any information on this manufacturer and was thinking maybe this was a "homemade" boat. The guy I bought it from, purchased it from the original owner back in 98. It is in sound shape, just needs to be painted and a few seats added to it. I was just trying to research and history I could find on this manufacturer.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Re: Fiberglass Manufacturer Inquiry

Welcome aboard!

Might help to post a few pictures of it. I've never heard of the manufacturer, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything. Sounds like someone might have lost a title and re-titled as a salvage or home built.

That looks very possibly home built - you might look through some of the plans HERE and see if you can match up the plans. Clean her up a bit and that looks like a nice boat.

The first three letters of the HIN is the MIC (manufacturers identification code). If the third letter is a Z then its home made. The first two letters will be the state abbreviation of the state that it was first registered in where it was assigned the HIN. If it dosesn't end in a Z then you can go to the USCG website and lookup up the MIC and that will give you the manufacturers name. If the MIC is GSI then it was built by Gary Smith in Maryland

Re: Fiberglass Manufacturer Inquiry

Found it on USGC! It was a local Maryland builder who was in business for about 12 years from 1979-91. It's was built for crabbing.

Thanks for the replies and help. As I fix her up I'll try post pics.
