fiberglass hull repair

Hey all,

I am new to this forum but have been reading for awhile for good info. I currently have a 1986 wellcraft 192 american that has turned into a pretty good project. My current dilemma is I was looking over the motor mounts because I am getting ready to install my freshly rebuilt mercruiser 470 in it and found the front motor mount to be rotted out. So decided to cut out the piece and replace the wood and fiberglass. While cutting out the piece I didn't pay attention to the cut depth on my saw and cut right through the hull with about a 4 inch long 1/8 inch wide slice. Now I know I messed up big time and I have worked with fiberglass before so I think I can repair this. Nearest I can tell, on a marine application, I basically need to grind down the area about about 3 or 4 inches around it (do expose the surrounding fiberglass) and basically fiberglass both sides and build up the fiberglass to make it about the same strength. If anyone has advice for me or any tips, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Re: fiberglass hull repair

Fiber glass both sides of the hull. And try to get the bottom side in line with the rest of the hull.
Multiple glass layers too.

You should have used a circular saw, and set the blade height very conservativley.

Hey all,

nope......sorry to say.....the second the boat was cut with a saw....it was toast !!!!!

BAAAAA HAAAAA HAAAAAAA.....(inside joke)

welcome to i boats !:D.....number one.....lets get you to the correct forum....boat building and restoration,......the glass geeks hang out there....:D

ok....now.....the repair you are planning is basically correct for the slice.....you will also want to fill the actual gouge with peanut butter...(do a search for that word in this forum...)

however......

somthing else bothers me.......if the motor mount is rotten.....the stringers are probally rot as well....you may have a total rebuild on your hands.

search core sample......you will need to take several samples from the stringers and transom........you might want to do a few foam core samples as well.

cheers
