Ok I got this 12 foot 2 man Fiberglass Creek boat from my BrotherInLaw and its been in the weather and not used for like 10 years.
Its real sturdy and looks great however. If you rub it anywhere against your skin you get fiberglass rash. Guess this is due too weather and drying out and what not.
My first thought is too mix some Resin and paint the whole boat with that.
Its Green and dont want too paint it any other color, but im thinking it needs something too coat over it too seal the fiberglass of its itchy substance.
What do you all suggest?

Re: Fiberglass Creek boat Itchy

Ive been all around the forums trying too find a way too seal the boat from being itchy.
Ive found alot of posts on how too assist in working with fiberglass too not get itchy. And also how too assist if you do get itchy.
But cant find anything that will help me too seal fiberglass from itch.

Any ideas will be appreciated

What about mixing resin and rolling it all over it?
Do you all think it will make it too heavy?
My guess is it would reinforce fiberglass but afraid it will make it heavier.
Or like you said guess I can just paint it.

You could apply fiberglass resin onto it........ it will have to be applied thin and the boat would still require sanding to prep for it....

Is the green paint that is on there now??? or is it imprgnated into the fiberglass?

you could resin over it, but you still would want to paint it, resin has little to no uv resistance on its own, thats why its covered w/ gelcoat or paint in the mfg. process, the added strength would be minimal as resin is not strong on its own, its the cloth/mat that adds rigidity.
if it where mine i'd sand and paint the inside and outside, rustoleum makes a good inexpensive paint you should be able to find close to home, lowes carries it in store here, not the od green like you have now, but they do have a green.
1 qt of primer and 1 qt of topcoat should do it with some to spare, roll it on with a small foam roller, follow directions on the can. $50 or less and a few hrs and your done. let it cure b4 splashing it per instructions.

Just to build on what osborn was saying, you really wouldn't want to paint on straight polyster resin because its not generally as UV resistant as a gel coat, and also because its not generally as thixotropic, so it won't build up the thickness that you will need without tending to sag. Epoxy will be better in terms of UV resistance, but still won't hang as well as say, a gel coat. Also, you have to think about the materials ability to flex, etc.
If there are exposed fibers, you will need to knock down any texture to the point where your coating will actually encapsulate the whole surface. If it doesn't need to be perfect, you could probably sand it down to 320 and just prime it, and paint it with a poly urethane paint.
By the way, thats pretty cool that it has a little trolling motor right in the middle, I've never seen that before! good luck

Re: Fiberglass Creek boat Itchy

Thanks all.
I will sand and Primer then Paint.
Yes I mounted the Head of his Trolling motor there 12 years ago when he got it.
I also added the foot control cables and on the shaft of trolling motor i mounted a Cross bar and attached the foot cables too it. I also used a Trailer plug on lower unit so i could mount and unmount too store.
After doing all this he never even used it and it sat in his backyard upside down for all these years. I tried many times too buy it he wouldnt. Now divorce so I had a chance too get it. FREE at that so lovin it and restore in progress.
Hate the divorce lovin the boat.

Well thanks again.
I will post pics when all said and done.

I second the rustoleum recommendation. I had the same issue with mine when I first got it. Kids wouldn't ride in it...

Here's the latest rebuild sprayed and rolled rustoleum on Good Friday. It was tan and the paint held up very well even though I never waxed it. I will be waxing it this time.

Looks like you are moving right along!!
Just another thought for you-How about adding some non-slip textured material to your top coat of paint?? Just a thought!
Good luck!
