hi everyone;
I've been a lurker in this forum for a long time and really enjoy reading the post. lots of great info here.
my question is this:
i own a 1974 wildcat brand name fiberglass trihull bass boat 14 foot long. i had a guy who is suppose to know fiberglass do a repair on the bottom back end under transome area that a stump busted thru which was about 5 inch hole diameter. please dont ask me how it happened as i dont know as i couldnt get a straight answer from my kids.
Anyhow this guy took bondo polyester resin and glass and repaired the hole first, then he took bondo glass short strand glass and filled it over the polyester resin fiberglass cloth patch. Then he used polyester resin and fiberglass cloth again over the bondo glass stuff. I looked at the bottom and it looks great, but looks can be decieving and i want your opinion if it will hold up? I don't want to get into the water in a boat that might be better as a yard ornament , so please throw at me what you have as i need to know before i go pick it up later this week. Any help is greatly appreciated in this.
Thanks in advance..

It's a little tricky to tell if it was done correctly by that description. What he needed to do was grind out all the broken glass and taper the area for several inches out away from the hole. Then mat needs to be used as the first layer before any type of cloth and mat needs to be used between each layer of cloth. As for the filler, it's not the best choice, but will work if sealed within two separate laminates, but again mat needs to be used before each layer of cloth. If he only used cloth the bond may be poor, this type of layup commonly fails in a year or so.

Mat is the fuzzy stuff, cloth is a fine woven fabric.
