Re: Favorite Tennessee Waters

They would be flanking us by a few hundred yds and would often get the view of many full moons in the middle of the day,[mine included] If ya know what I mean. Sorry WAY off topic here..

It was a good diversion off topic. I believe that's what they refer to as "impromptu foreign relations." It was also probably one of the pinnacles of NAVAL strategy and warfare (the cold war, that is). Thank you for your service.

I live near Cookville TN, I have spent hours on Dale Hollow, however I have been spending at least 1 day a week on Cordell Hull lake, this lake is clean and if you are into Bass (large or small mouth), Crappie or White Bass fishing this is the place. I literally have not been out when I did not catch 5-10 Large mouth that went 2-8 lb's. I would recomend Defeated Creek Marina, very friendly people and spotless facilty.

Welcome to iBoats Davis. Cookeville is a nice town - I'm around there about every three months. I haven't been on Cordell Hull yet. I like the idea of Crappie though.

I've had soooo much trouble catching bass in Tennessee. I can't get the Michigan top-water fishing out of me.

We'll be in the Holler next week. What are your favorite coves? --won't be fishin; I am a fish. Looking for the scenic areas. Have been there a few times but no where near how much you have been. Will be staying in a Holly Creek cabin for the first time--hope they are nice. Not much to choose from if you want to keep your boat in a slip close by. That's good to hear about Cookeville--we want to move there. Does it have more than one supermarket? My husband is a refrigeration expert--specializes in grocery store refrigeration systems. Any recommendations welcome.

Re: Favorite Tennessee Waters

I have never stayed at Holly Creek, however I stay each year at Eagle Cove (owned by the same company) and the cabins are very nice. Eagle Cove has a marina, and then a set of docks that people staying in the cabins can use (I believe - at least I did). They tend to advertise Holly Creek ahead of Eagle Cove, so I'd expect their cabins to be at least as nice. The cabins at Eagle Cove are closer to the water (I think), but in TN you don't get true "lake front" stays due to the way our shores work out. You should enjoy it.

Cookeville definitely has more than one supermarket. It's the county seat for Putnam county, and is something of an economic hub in that portion of the state. It's a reasonable size town with most of the conveniences of the bigger cities. I've never lived there, but I pass through pretty regularly and think I'd like living there well enough.

I can't tell you too much about Dale Hollow because I only get to go out for about 5 hours each time I go. We typically have two boats - one for people to swim off of and one to tow skiers/tubers. We anchor the 'toon about 8 miles NE of where you'll be (across the main body of the lake). We run in that portion of the lake (there's a tributary that's reasonable size running north) for the skiing and tubing. Most of our boating, oddly enough, happens in Kentucky at that point even though we're staying in TN :D

I doubt if you can go wrong on Dale Hollow. It's pretty EVERYWHERE. Center Hill lake is like that too - it's just pretty all over. We've had a really dry summer, and fall is going to be short and sweet this year. Leaves are not going to be quite as colorful, and are already starting to fall some.

Enjoy your trip!

Over 3/4 of the large mouth I catch are on top water plugs at the opening to the many coves that run off main the lake, lately the afternoon times have been producing good numbers and sizes (3-5lb's ) on black worms with blue tail using a Tx stye rig.

I don't know wether to be happy that I've been approaching it right on the top, or cranky that I still can't catch 'em effectively :D I've been playing more with the TX rig styles. I'll add the black worms into the mix and see what happens. Thanks.

Re: Favorite Tennessee Waters

Thank you southkogs for your very generous reply, i appreciate all the info. yes you figured right on the cabins at eagle cove being the only ones close to the water but they both do offer slips. i like being out more towards the deeper water and Holly Creek is a closer drive for us but since I refuse to pay in advance on a no-refund policy, am taking my chances on either one. With another tropical depression heading in that the models are disagreeing on the track of, i may be right to take my chances on the cabin--if we end up "homeless" it will be my bad. That's good to know about cookeville, thanks again

Re: Favorite Tennessee Waters

No problem Hollie - We just shoved the remnants of Lee north. It was raining and cold here for about 2 1/2 days. By the weekend it's supposed to be in the mid 70's and mostly sunny. We'll be in Cumberland Mountain State Park - almost due south of Holly Creek - so, we'll be eatin' the same weather as you. Might be a bit chilly for swimming, but I doubt that the water temps have dropped much. Stay neck deep and you should be okay! Enjoy your trip.

If you get stymied at Holly Creek (hard to imagine this time of year), do a quick search on the net. There are plenty of places around here.

Norris is really pretty. I have a friend who lives in Norris, but I haven't been out on the lake yet ... just standing on the edges drooling.

Stay away from Norris! Nothing to see here... really. Move along. LOL

Thanks Southkogs--we did stay at the 2 bdr chalet at Holly Creek and it was a good place to stay--next to a houseboat-- but for much less money. It was reasonably clean and very nice inside with everything we would need. Convenient. No complaints about us parkng the trailer by our door. The slip included barely fit the boat and was a chore to get in and out of but we used it a couple of nights. Yes the water was down ten degrees! it was 73-77 at the most. Still a lovely way to spend 4 days and I didn't want to leave. Barefooted up Galton Hollow, Pusley, and Fannies Creek it was very calm in the afternoons. The Moon rise was cool and I could see it setting from the bedroom window as well.
Can't wait to get back there.

What I like about the Cookeville area is the quality of the people. Hospitality is especially good due to motel check in's and restaurant waiters/waitresses being students working their way through Tennessee Tech University. Most major brands of "fern bars" are represented there--with my favorite restaurant being Puleo's Italian Restaurant (out of Knoxville.)

The people raised in the Cookeville are are just rural enough to be "real", but only 85 miles east of Nashville--which is very cosmopolitan.
This is also an area with no social strife--where people essentially get along with each other.

By the way, we're going to have some glorious boating days in the coming days. They're looking at mid 80's during the day and high 50's at night. The water is still okay to swim in, but will be quickly getting colder. I was out this afternoon (Sunday) on my Waverunner, and people were everywhere fishing off their docks. Fishing appears to be improving from the Summer doldrums. Saturdays are especially slow, as Lake People are also Southeast Conference football season ticket holders.

Just because it's not Summer is no reason to stop boating in the Mid South. Viewing the turning leaves 5 weeks from now is best when seen from a boat on the lake.

Re: Favorite Tennessee Waters

Yeah, I'm a transplant to the area (I live in Murfreesboro, TN now - but originally I'm from Detroit) and I have come to love this state. And I'm right with you Bamaman1 - this is the time of the year for cruising. It's sooo pretty when the leaves turn.

Yesterday I hit a rock on Percy Priest lake. We were trying to do some fishing and I was working into the shallows a little. I was just making steerage so the hit didn't damage much more than the prop ... but I sure took a chunk outta' that.

Wife and I hang out on the Tennessee rive a lot down by the Land Between the Lakes we have found several good camping spots, although we usually stay on the boat and let everyone else put up tents. I am planning a trip up to Nashville soon. We also boat on the Cumberland from Ashland City, TN to Cadiz, Ky I love being on the river.

Hey Kogs - This topic is 3 years old, is there still Tennessee boating?

My boating bucket list includes doing some lock throughs. Chattanooga is the closest on the Tennessee river near Chickamauga lock. One of these days.

... well, if you've seen my other topic I just started, the answer is NO! Or not for me for a week or two. I overheated the ole' Stringer and have to figure out what's going on and how much I broke. :faint2:

A few of us from TN were talking about just reporting where we were going and maybe even plan some get togethers 'round here, so I thought I'd bump this thread if we wanna' use it.

Chattanooga is on the short list of places I want to boat through. I've got two locks a little closer, but Chattanooga has such a pretty downtown waterfront. If I just didn't have this stupid job, y'know? :D
