Favorite motor flushers?

I had a small mishap today.. put the new carb on my 3.0L, and got it to run. Wife was helping me and we couldn’t find what I call my “ good pair of ears “. I used a pair with a wire frame and rectangle rubber gaskets that literally came with my house ( and a pretty nice outboard stand ).

I didn’t notice until it was too late, the flushers weren’t flushing so now it’s time to address an impeller, and I might look at the flapper, but I think that is probably okay.

Anyone have a preferred brand? I know my. Little Suzuki is picky and only the good pair works with it. This is an Alpha gen 1 that I’m working with

I use this quicksilver / Merc brand. It has the probe that goes through the pickup screens so it can't fall off

Never seen one like that looks like it would work well

I use 2" painters tape to keep my muffs in place

My set of round muffs are probably well over 30-35 years old. Not even sure what mfgr they are. Never had an issue with them and have used them on both outboards and my I/O. From those I have spoke with, the round ones have been good, but the rectangular ones seem to be the problem ones. Why, I don't know....never used or even looked at the square ones.

I use the same ones they are the size not ones that really fit right and allow the impeller to prime quickly

Im going to order one of those. The problem I had is, my wife hooked it up and I didn’t check it.. I’ve got a spare impeller and I’ll get a new housing just in case.The square ones simply won’t seal on a mercruiser lower.

What I noticed about the Merc/Quicksilver ones vs the aftermarket rectangular muffs is that the rubber on the Merc ones is thinner & much more flexible to confirm to the shape of the lower unit….

I over heated my 4.3 (same thing as the 3ltr) and along with the impeller I had to replace my exhaust baffles. I know I am using the wring term, there are plastic flapper in the exhaust that prevents water from going back into the motor ... I bet someone will be able to correct me or explain better or even say its not required, lol.

Exhaust flappers or shutters. They are needed to keep water from rushing up the Y pipe when slowing down…

Used THIS TYPE for many years without issues. Did replace the Y piece after some years because the plastic gets brittle

I just replaced it. I’m sure it’s probably toasted a little but probably still work. But I might buy a riser gasket and get another cause there cheap

I've used these since I got my boat, too. They've worked great for me... except when there has been operator error...
