Fastwin 18 - Help IDing Part

Is this part on my 65 Fastwin for adjusting the idle? Motor runs so smooth that sometimes I idle it down too low and she dies on me. Is this like an idle stop? Is that the proper term? All I want to do is control how far down I can rev the motor so it doesn't die on me when I'm trying to dock.

Ayuh,..... That nub is for an ole remote,....
The idle adjustment screw should be at the carb,....

The screw ( with the spring ) you see there is for setting your preferred idle speed.

Think of it as part of the throttle system controlling fuel flow to the carb. On top of the carb there is also an idle control for the air/fuel mix. Your current settings allow you to shut off the engine with the twist grip (throttle). If it idles slowly and smoothly until you shut it off with the throttle grip, that may be the way you want to run with it.

That screw is used to set the lowest idle speed you like or where the motor is happy.----To stop the motor the push the STOP button !!

try the screw it will stop you going to low.

is everything adjusted electrical wise incl timing and carb low speed circuit

Yes, that is the Idle Speed Adjustment Screw. Turning it In or Out determines how far you retard the Spark Timing, which is what determines the Idle Speed. The Carb is to remain Fully Closed.
Adjust it until you get an Idle Speed you are happy with.

My Dad and uncle were fans of backing the Screw off far enough so as to kill the Engine by pulling back on the Throttle.

Thanks for the clarification gentlemen. It was the thought that I was throwing the timing off that had me hesitating to mess with this screw.

I did not use a VOM to set the points, but I checked an rechecked them with a feeler gauge until they were as close as I could get them. I was pretty much out of travel, guess that's what I get for buying non OEM point sets, but was able to get them very close and the motor really screams out on the lake.

It would be a good idea to test the stop button before doing any throttle/carb adjustments. Bring the motor down to a slow idle and stop it with the button.

It may be that the prior owner set the idle speed after finding that the stop button was not working.

The Choke can also be used to Stop the Engine. In fact that was how Evinrude said to do it in the late 50s

You can adjust that screw all day long!!------It retards the timing to slow down the idle.-----That does nothing to endanger the motor !
