Re: fastwin 18 coughing and dying...again...

quick test seemed to prove that this was the problem, so now I am moving on to more trivial things.

i am investigating the violent armature plate movement at idle. the armature plate is rubbing on the inside of of the flywheel lip at the base of the flywheel. I have loosened everything all the way down to the armature plate retaining ring and loosely fit the flywheel and rotated it, in an attempt to let it center itself. this didnt seem to do much. any ideas on how to prevent it from rubbing??

I would assume that you have fuel floating on something, could it be water; when I pull a sample of fuel I never see anything floating on something else.

haha, yea thats water... i tested the tank afterwards and there was hardly any water in it, not sure how the line got that much water in it. i guess it sucked it all from the tank, thats why there was none in there!

anyone have ideas on why the flywheel might be rubbing the armature plate?

When that happens it is usually that you have the coils too far out and they are rubbing the flywheel. You need to adjust the coils so that they line up with the bosses below them exactly.

Yup, your pump is working Ok. Sooo...the next thing to look at is the ignition, points, plugs, coils. Sometimes a coil that is going bad will be OK for a few minutes and then start to give you intermittant fire and result in the symptoms you described. (don't give up just yet)

all mentioned parts have been replaced in the past month or so.

sam: i will check again, but i lined the up with the bosses and there is actually a mark on the bottom of the flywheel and one on the armature plate where it is rubbing.

Re: fastwin 18 coughing and dying...again...

well i pulled the flywheel off again and the coils were deffinatly lined up with the bosses... but they were hitting anyways. I moved them back as far as they could go to insure that they wounldnt hit. they actually didnt move that much farther back. I did noticed that from hitting the flywheel the end of the coil mounting boss, that sticks towards the flywheel, was becoming seperated. (the bosses are layers of metal layed on top of one another, the layers are starting to pull apart). will this effect anything?

I did determine that bad gas was my problem AGAIN (from a gas station over 120miles from the first one). i took everything apart and cleaned and let it dry. reassembled and it still coughs and dies. when it is running it is consistently coughing. it seems like almost every 2nd firing on one of the cylinders is a cough. I switched the plug wires around just to make sure they werent backwards. thats deffinatly not the problem. ideas??

Re: fastwin 18 coughing and dying...again...

I aligned the throttle cam about a month or so ago and it was out of align again. I fixed that and reset the idle screw to 1 1/4 (as per the manual) and between the two it appears fixed... again. This is about the 10th time its been "fixed" usually after one or two trips to the river the problem will be back... only time will tell.
