Our subs are much faster than any of our surface fleet.

Re: fastest vessel

Published maybe?
Don't really know about sub speeds.
I have seen pictures of the super carriers at full speed though.
The Navy never publishes the true top speeds of any of their vessels as it is.

Here is an interesting observation on the subject however.
When the 378' Coast Guard cutter my son was on went to the Persian gulf with the Tarawa battle group they had to run both turbines and both diesels at wide open to keep 30kts and the frigates in the group were at less than 2/3 so the coasties could keep up!

Whoops! figured I'd better add this for newbie types. Taking the frigates to full throttle may have only yielded an additional 5kts or so.

Re: fastest vessel

The Perry class frigate I was on was rated at 28kts. We ran 42 on sea trials when she was new.

I'm not saying your'e wrong here Jinx as I have no knowledge of the matter.
It just seems with all the friction and water they must push through that this would be impossible.

Re: fastest vessel

Yea, I'm not sure if that's correct. I've heard our subs can only do about 18 knots underwater.

Re: fastest vessel

Taking into consideration the pictures I saw (the CVN). I would tend to agree with this statement though.

"4- Now, this is kind of extrapolated. But certain engineers fully believe that almost every reactor and corresponding drive system in their respective vessels are designed from Navy requirement that they are NOT supposed to do their max potential to save them for their expected 40+ year service life. Meaning in essence if there was ever a need for a true max speed with total disregard for the ship, her drive system and maybe even the crew, these ships could forseeably push out some revolutions for speeds around 55+ knots."

Re: fastest vessel

Our Seawolf subs could run 30knots submerged. Virginia class could probably do more, but theres alot the military can't tell us..:)

Re: fastest vessel

My J24 has hit well over 20 Knots when you have people on board willing to set a spinaker in 25 knots plus winds and get really wet when the boat gets knocked down because it allways ends badly :D but is fun while it lasts

It puts out a pretty good Rooster Tail to ;)

Re: fastest vessel

The Navy built a pair of 100 ton Suface Effect Ships in the '70s. One used props the other used water jets. The water jet driven SES reach 100 knots or about 115 mph.

This was a 100 ton boat that was doing 100knots. 100 tons is pretty small for navy stuff, but these were basically scaled down models. Still very impressive though

Although techincally a boat a Wing in Ground Effect vehicle would be eligible for the highest speed, but they are also flying (sort of). The Soviets built "ekranoplans" that could go around 250 mph. Neat stuff
