Good point!!Don't tighten the vice-grips so tight that the shaft is burred. It shouldn't be all that much force needed.
Rev is rev and neu is neu and no foward have to push far foward before it would engage foward and the rev are really highWhen shifting using the remote, is forward forward and neutral/reverse correct?
Was this together before? or are you matching this up now?1978 Mercury 115hp lower end with 1980 power head registration has 200hp
Yea was together before shifted no problems did the ccw turning of the shift shaft went 180dg and stopped turned with vise til it clicked turn crank shaft so prop turn cw for foward so going to install tonightWas this together before? or are you matching this up now?
Some years/HP have different adapter-shapes to connect to the shift-shaft.
(square & spline shapes)
Are the both the same?
Spline are top just like luWas this together before? or are you matching this up now?

where is the Merc forum u was talking about with the picsThere's helpful Stickies at the top of Merc. forum, here's one
This is how I do it in about 60 sec.: Turn the LU shift shaft by hand counter-clockwise until it
stops, then with Vise Grips tight on the bottom of the shaft turn it a
few more degrees CCW until it clicks into a stop, this
should be neutral - check by turning prop-shaft --
prop should spin freely.
Put control in N and go ahead and attach LU to driveshaft housing some turning of the flywheel will help the DS splines align.
Do not shift into reverse unless you turn the prop at the same time.
I'm not sure what pictures you're talking about.Spline are top just like lu

One last thing is there suppose to be some ring or something around the coupler to hold it in place cause it’s hard to line up the coupler in upper shaft with the lower while holding lu in olaceThe Force power said:

this is what I was referring to
Most if not all Mercs. had some type of "guide" to keep the upper shift-shaft in place for that purpose (they tend to fall out, once the LU has been removed)One last thing is there suppose to be some ring or something around the coupler to hold it in place cause it’s hard to line up the coupler in upper shaft with the lower while holding lu in olace
Done installed took 2 peps cause I don’t have a retainer on the upper shaft now have to do a little adjustment to shift cable due to 78 lu and a 1980 upper not much ask tho but any way thanks guys this was a big help and decently will NOT forget how to do itMost if not all Mercs. had some type of "guide" to keep the upper shift-shaft in place for that purpose (they tend to fall out, once the LU has been removed)
Took it took mechanic up the street he said my cable came loose in the remote enough to where I worked at times and didn’t other times had them to swap out cables and it works great now they told me I had all hooked up properly but I never opened the remote don’t u see stand it fully or wanted to disconnect something I won’t be able to put back togetherMost if not all Mercs. had some type of "guide" to keep the upper shift-shaft in place for that purpose (they tend to fall out, once the LU has been removed)
