I am new to the boating community, and am trying to put a boat camping trip together for lake Powell. I have recently purchased a 16' saturn inflatable but am having trouble finding an outboard to go on it. Today on craigslist I found this listing:

"2018 Mercury 20hp EFI 4 stroke Tiller short shaft outboard motor with 3 gal fuel tank. Pull start. Motor has about 35 hours on it. 4 blade prop. $2700"

This seems a little steep to me. I could buy a new one for $500 more. I'd love some opinions on a fair price.

Thanks,
Michael

Buy the new one with warranty I say.-------Shop time these days is around $100 / hr.-----That $500 will quickly disappear if there are any issues.

First, thanks for the quick response. I would definitely prefer the new one, with a warranty, versus a 2018 for that price, but what would a fair price be for the one in the ad?

Fair pricing has disappeared in the " pandemic " market.-----Huge demand for these products.

2018 should still have a warranty. Seems in line with value. There are also book values on outboards

Not sure there is anything such as a 'fair' price. It is more a matter of what you can negotiate.

All the seller has to do is find one person willing to pay the $2700 to validate his pricing.

He may also be starting high in hopes of getting some bottom line number that he has in mind.

Used motors, particularly low hour motors, are going at high prices. I paid $3300 including tax for my new 2021 20HP Mercury. I also had to wait 8 weeks for it to come in. I don't know what the wait time is now.

You said the OB has a four blade prop. My OB came with a three blade prop. So, that four blade prop may be an upgrade or the motor itself may be a Prokicker model that has been configured for tiller operation. That may affect pricing as well.
