Failed Exhaust Bellows

On my Volvo Penta 4.3GL-D I believe my exhaust bellows is torn or loose since the exhaust water comes out right outside the transom plate and none seems to come out from the prop shaft. Otherwise the engine runs fine. Will this hurt anything by running the boat indefinitely in water with this condition?

Exhaust water and gasses is designed to drain there when the engine is at idle. It will not pass thru the prop until running at speed in the water. You are good.

Can you explain how it will escape the bellows and not pass thru the prop? I have looked at the repair manual drawings and I don't see how that could happen. I may be missing something, so please educate me on this.

There are holes in the exhaust bellows (maybe 10 of them). Each about .125" in diameter.

while on the trailer and idling, your cooling water and a bit of exhaust is coming out of the idle relief ports on the transom.

this is as designed

until the engine RPMs get up high enough to push the water and exhaust out the prop (overcoming the head pressure of the water level). after that, the cooling water and the exhaust is flowing out the drive/prop

exhaust bellows normally have holes or slits to drain the water
