lift the trailer up , make sure the lock lever is all the way up and the fingers , that go under the ball are all the way back, set it back down and see if it will lock.
a little grease or WD40 may be called for :)
sounds like the lock was not all the way open and you set it down on the fingers OUCH! :)
(the trailer lock , not yours)

Also ensure that you are using the correct size ball.

Try to push the boat away from the tow vehicle while pushing down on the lock.

Re: ezloader trailer hitch problems??

I always try to put the hitch about 1/2-2/3 over the ball when I'm lowering it down so the front lip of the hitch sits on top of the ball. Then when I continue to let the jack down, the weight of the tongue either pulls the trailer forward slightly or pulls the truck back slightly so the ball slides into the hitch while still holding the ball toward the front. Doing it this way I don't run the problem of having the locking fingers come down sitting on top of the ball and get pushed up behind it. In other words, the ball enters the hitch in a diagonal fashion from front to center as it goes in.

I agree with the lube idea. A little of your marine axle grease or some lithium grease on the ball and/or inside the hitch can do wonders (also can make for a slightly quieter ride & reduce corrosion). Be careful though, it gets messy when you rub against the ball/hitch when it's greased up :)
