Hi Everyone,

Apologies if this has already been asked a 1000 times. But I have a stalling question I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction with...

I have a 2000 Volvo Penta 5.0 GL. It was given to me by a family member earlier this year.. so its my first boat and I am trying to learn and repair as much as I can on my own. The boat was running just fine for a few months that i had it. I then stopped using for a few months.. (got married, which took up a ton of time) Now the inlaws are down and I took them out on the boat yesterday.

The boat started up without a problem. I left it ideling at the dock (supervised) to go and park my truck & trailer. by the time I had gotten back the boat had stalled out. It took a few tries to start it back up again, and it ran fine for a little while longer and then sarted stalling out again..I tried to get the boat up on a plane and the boat stalled out...I could start the engine no problem, but it seemed like any time I gave it too much gass or not enough gas it would stall out. I limped back to the dock and pulled the boat out.. When i got home and started the engine to clean it with fresh water.. it ran fine. I gave it some gas and it stalled out a bit.. until I backed of the throttle and left it in idle...

My inlaws think its a carburetor issue... if anyone can give me some ideas on what they think it might be.. that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks you in advance.

The carb is a very high possibility, have you checked the fuel filter to see if there is water in it? Remove the filter, pour it into a clear container and see if water settles to the bottom.
Put on a new filter, NEVER reuse one.

I replaced the fuel filter and the problem continued. Is it possible water in the fuel would cause a problem like this?

Sure it's possible. When you changed the filter, did you check the old one for water? If not, get another new filter, remove the filter you are now using and check it for water.

Many many times I have run into customers boats that had so much water build up in the tank, that the filter just couldn't keep up. All the fuel pump was pumping was water when trying to get on plane. But until you actually check the old filters, you could be filling the new filter with mostly water, but enough gas to idle around. That same water is killing the inside of your carb if that is happening.

How old is the gas in it??? That would be a good place to start. If your gas is older than 6 months and it didn't have any stabilizer added to it, I'd suspect it's the culprit. Drain the fuel tank and fill with fresh fuel. There are lots of possibilities as to what the problem may be. You have to go through them one by one.

Yes, I vote for 'bad gas' also. It not only effects people, but it effects boats too. :D

Hopefully, you do not have too much gas in the tank, and can just fill with new gas ( + stabilizer)

I guess the inlaws were not impressed . . .
