Relative newbie to 4 strokes. I have a '99 Merc 40hp 4 stroke purchased "used" last summer. I never noticed much exhaust coming from motor. Took it out on 40 degree windless day and noticed quite a bit of exhaust at trolling speed. Is this normal? It did not smell smokey or burnt. I just never noticed it "puffing" like that.

Not to worry, DB.<br /><br />Even a slight wind will carry away 4 stroke exhaust fumes. At 40* your engine will "steam" like a car exhaust at low temps until fully warmed up.<br /><br />Good luck.
