Exhaust Flappers too tight

I received a set of new flappers 807166A3 for my 1988 Y pipe and I have 2 questions. Are these the right flappers for Y pipe 44265-C and if they are has anybody ever had a problem with any of the flappers (OEM or aftermarket) not fitting. The ones I received are a wee bit too large in diameter and the plastic retainer ring will not fit into the Y pipe.

44265-C is stamped on the pipe and when I search mercruiser 44265-C my Y pipe comes up along with offers on ebay and other vendors. I am surprised that you can't find it. Yes, I thoroughly read Chris' piece on the flappers and based on that I ordered 807166A3, but it doesn't fit. That's why I wanted reassurance that I did order the right flapper for my exhaust. My main question was I was wondering if anybody else has encountered problems with part #807166A3 being too big. Attached is a picture of my Y pipe

I'm searching part numbers at mercruiserparts.com
Looking for any comments on supersession

Wanted to see how the flappers fit or attempt to fit in location. I have a set of the flappers on the shelf, and they fit fine in my BBC Y pipe, but yours is a 1988, so I have nothing to compare

Can anybody confirm that #807166A3 is the correct flapper for my pipe. Chris please look at my Y pipe and confirm that the part I got is indeed the correct part. I am pretty sure it is, but please confirm. Thanks

Based on a 1988 V8 engine, you have the right shutters to replace the old ones. Yes, they will look too big, they sit on top of the y-pipe, not 'in' it.

Thanks @Drcoffee and @achris. That made my day. No, we are not the only ones apparently. I have read a bunch of reviews online and half of the complaints are that these things don't fit, too tight, modification needed etc. and the other half of the complaints are that these things are total junk. None of them lasted more than 6 months before the rubber flaps broke and caused more mayhem in the exhaust system.
Chris, btw. my engine is a 4.3 V6 not a V8. I am totally confused now. you are saying that stud #1on part does NOT go into hole #1on pipe and surface #2 does not go into the inside of the Y pipe. I thought that the only thing that sits on top of the pipe is the shoulder #3 of the part. But anyway, since these parts seem to be inferior, I will have to find a better way. I will manufacture an exact duplicate of the original metal flappers, either in SS or aluminum and hope that will work. And another thing, buying OEM ($85) or buying aftermarket ($30) makes no difference except price. Everything is made in China. Granted some parts may be a little better than others but that's about it.

Doing a little surfing on fleebay and there seems to be design differences between flappers. The cross bar / pivot point seems to be plastic or metal. The plastic looking units may just be metal that was overmolded. It also looks like you can just buy the flappers without the perimeter frame. Can you reuse the old frame with these new flappers? Lastly, one set looks like the cross bar has hooks to retain the flappers, where others are a straight bar. has anyone used these versions, and what was you experiences?

Flappers with frame are to retrofit old style y-pipe that used the single pin type flapper. Without frame is for new style y-pipe that is grooved for them.

1995 was around about the changeover year. You'd need to pull the rubber tube down below the top of the y-pipe and see if you have a slot (for new style) or a pin (for old style)...

Post your engine serial number and I may be able to identify it for you..

took a while but on The mercury marine parts book, it looks to be the older full frame style.

That's what I'm showing too. Old style pin type shutters, which means full frame retrofit new shutters.

It's in the description, but I have added pictures of each of the different shutters in my exhaust shutters document...

If you look at the pictures in post #9 my Y pipe seems to be the old style with a hole, which btw is off centered and the stud in the other picture is also off centered and is supposed to go in that hole and it probably would if those flapper rings would fit properly. I admit what I bought did not come from Quicksilver or Sierra, but so what. It may not be the best, but at least the stuff should fit. Below is a picture of the new style which Chris is talking about, I guess. It has a slot and a square hole to accommodate those square grommets and flappers only, no ring. But I am just guessing. Chris is the expert on this.

Im guessing on this, but I dont think the new version is supposed to fit in or by those holes. The new unit looks to be self supporting And sits on the edge of the y pipe. Once the rubber boots are installed, its locked in place. Correct me if Im wrong. My boat is in storage, so I wont deal with it until May 2022

the post looks more like a boss to keep the shutter square in the pipe

How many different Y pipes are there actually. Just two, right, like I have shown in post #9 and #16. Please correct me if I am wrong. I am curious. There is the old style, the one with the offset holes and the new style with the slot and square holes. Are there any other versions Y pipes?

Pre 1983 are different again, and the single piece exhaust manifold/elbow for the 1996-1998 V6s used a different y-pipe again.. Also there are about 6 different ones for the in-line engines.

The problem with the pin-based shutters hasn't the shutters, it was the pivot pin. With the constant movement of the shutter on the pin it would eventually wear through, and if you were lucky it would fall all the way through and get caught up in the drive exhaust cavity. If you weren't lucky it would jam up at the bottom of the y-pipe and wear a hole in it, then it's "all hands to the pumps!"
