Hi, first post. I found why my 470 is over heating, When I removed the exhaust riser, the flapper was gone, just the cross bar is there, using a wire at the exhaust ports outside the boat I can move them but cannot extract them, is there any kind of tool available that can be used to fish them out from the exhaust pipe inside the boat. If fishing fails what else might work? Thanks greg

There's something called a "mechanic's claw" that is about 24" long, flexible, that extends 3 opposing hooks and spring retracts them from the handle. Most auto supply stores should have them.

Re: exhaust flapper 470r

Thanks for the replys. No luck fishing for the flapper with the claw. I ordered the seesnake micro to look inside, if I can see the pieces I may be able to snag them. If I disconnect the exhaust bellows from the leg end could I reach the pieces from there? and be able to reconnect the bellows with adhesive and clamp ? it looks like enough room. I am disabled so I am trying to do this without taking off the outdrive. I have called a marine mechanic that makes house calls that I have used before but no call back from him yet. Thanks again greg

It's 6 nuts and 1 e clip to pull the drive.....
a whole lot easier than screwing around with this fishing expedition (that will never work).
You need to pull the drive yearly anyway to check alignment, u joints, grease slpine, check coupler anyway.

Just pull the stupid thing and look.

I finally got to work again. After removing the aft trim cylinders and the 6 nuts on the outdrive, the unit seperates about 1/2 inch but will not come off all the way, I need to know what to try? I put shift in forword gear before starting removal. this is a 470R 1984 year outdrive ser# 6884319 Thanks greg
