Excessive Fuel Usage

Hi: We have a 26' 1979 slickcraft (AMF) cabin cruiser with a new 454 raw-water-cooled engine. The boat runs great. However, we seem to be using way too much fuel (gas). A trip from Redondo Beach to Catalina Island is using up over 80 gallons, and that just doesn't seem right at all - it's only 26 miles across the sea! We trim it and have a clean bottom. Further, the engine runs perfect with no lugging or black smoke. We are at a loss - your comments are appreciated.

That's a lot of boat to be pushing, and depending on how fast you were going and how you were loaded, that's not out of the question. You may need to adjust your driving habits a bit to conserve fuel.

I'm sure others will have more to say about it.
