evinrude won't stop runnin

i replaced my ignition switch due to the motor not stopping when the switch is turned to the off position. the only way to stop it was to hit the kill switch. after replacing the switch the motor runs but will not stop again. however the kill switch isn't functioning properly either. now the only way to kill it is to choke it to death, no pun intended, ha ha. what possibly could be the problem. both switches are 3 position w/ push choke. i believe it is hooked up the same as it was origionally.

Oh sure, first you all have to tell us how great the E-tec is and now we have to hear about the Evinrude that won't die. :rolleyes: Go figure. Ya really know how to hurt a Merc Man. :D I think you would have more responses in the Evinrude forum. Of course there are those that go both ways here. :eek:

The following may be of interest.<br /><br />(Engine Won't Shut Off)<br />(J. Reeves)<br /> <br />(Magneto Capacitance Discharge Ignition Systems)<br /> <br />Single Powerpack Setup:<br />--------------------------- <br />A black wire is connected from a ground on the powerhead to the powerpack. A black/yellow wire is connected from the powerpack to the raised "M" terminal of the ignition switch. A black wire is connected to the other "M" terminal of the ignition switch to ground.<br /><br />In the OFF position, the two "M" terminals are connected internally, shorting out the ignition/powerpack.<br /><br />In the ON position, the two "M" terminals are not connected, allowing the ignition/powerpack to engage.<br /><br />If when shutting the switch off, the engine runs normally on all cylinders, there would be a break in the black/yellow wire between the ignition switch and the powerpack, or a faulty ignition switch.<br />-------------------------<br />Dual powerpack setup:<br /><br />A black wire is connected from a ground on the powerhead to the powerpack(s). A black/yellow wire is connected from each of the powerpacks to the main electrical conector at the engine. From that connector, those two black/yellow wires are reduced/combined ionto one black/yel;low wire which is connected to the raised "M" terminal of the ignition switch. A black wire is connected to the other "M" terminal of the ignition switch to ground.<br /><br />In the OFF position, the two "M" terminals are connected internally, shorting out the ignition/powerpacks.<br /><br />In the ON position, the two "M" terminals are not connected, allowing the ignition/powerpacks to engage.<br /><br />If when shutting the switch off, the engine runs normally on all cylinders, there would be a break in the black/yellow wire between the ignition switch and the large RED electrical terminal at the engine, or a faulty ignition switch.<br /><br />If when shutting the switch off however, the engine drops one bank and continues to run on the other bank, there would be either a break in the black/yellow wire between the RED plug and the affected powerpack, or a faulty powerpack.
