Im am new to boats.I decided to finally buy a bass boat.I spoke to a fellow who is selling a 19 foot bass cat.I think he said the boat had a 175 evinrude.(i was driving and didnt write the info down)Anyways he said it had approx 300 hours on it.Said it ran great. The only thing was that it was always hard to start. No matter if it was winter or summer.Once started it would continue to run and would restart every time.He also said he took it to a pro evenrude mechanic and he said nothing was wrong with it thats just the way it is.Does this sound right?Somewhere in my memory banks i think i remember someone saying this is typical of evinrude.Well any thoughts or help would be appreciated.

If you fill the carb's with the primer bulb, set the warm lever, hold the choke, or primer while cranking, that engine should fire instantly. I'm afraid someone is wrong about Evinrude motors' being hard to start.

Sellers always say that the motor runs great. Always...even if it barely runs at all.

The real reputation of Johnnyrudes is that they start really easily. If this one is hard to start, look out...after you get it, it may not start at all sometime when you're at the lake.

One common (and expensive) reason for hard starting is low compression. I'd look elsewhere.

Do not buy a boat without a trial run. You don't buy a car without driving it (do you??). Improper starting procedure is the only reason a JonnyRude starts hard (unless of course there is some other mechanical, electrical, or fuel related issue). Buy a $20.00 compression tester and at least do a compression test.

Welcome!!

Try the old 4 step method --

1- Pump the bulb to pressurize the system,
2- Turn the key to the "On" position (do not engage the starter),
3- Push the key in to activate the primer and count to 8,
4- Turn the key to the "Start" position.

The motor should start almost instantly. You may have to "bump" the primer as it warms up.
