Evinrude Variable Oiling Test?

I just bought a Stratos Bassboat with a '96 Evinrude 130 HP OB. Previous owner didn't trust the autmatic oiling system and premixed all the gas. I have filled the oil tank and run the engine an hour or two through a tankfull. The oil however barely went down in the reservoir. Now I don't trust it either and am premixing myself. There are no alarms going off and no wires are disconnected. I have heard that marking the level then running it is the best test but, as I said, it hardly goes down. Any wisdom out there would be appreciated!

There are 3 tests that you have to run to test the pump assembly. They are explained in the service manual.

You have to test the NO OIL alarm, the oil delivery amount, and the prime test. There is also a pressure and vacuum test that you can perform on the pump by itself.

Keep in mind that the VRO will vary the ratio from 50:1 to 150:1 depending on load and fuel delivery. If the average delivery was 100:1, you need to go through 12 gallon of fuel for every pint of oil used. A couple hours of running might not be enough to give you a good indication.
When I bought a used VRO motor, I ran 50:1 mix along with the VRO system until I was comfortable that it was functioning. After about 12 gallon of fuel/mix use I switched to a 100:1 for another 12 gallon. Since then I have used straight gas and let the VRO do its job.

Charles
