This may sound dumb but how do I tell if I have a 15" or 20" transom version of an Evinrude 70hp (AE70TLCDC)?
I have measured the mid section from join to join and it is 18".
Ahoy, Greg.

Welcome to the board.

I believe that the "L" in the model number identifies your engine as a long (20") shaft engine.

The measurement you should take is from the mount surface that meets the top of the transom to the anti-ventilation plate.

Good luck.
Take a look at the picture in the post link below.
You need to measure from the top inside of the transom bracket, to the cavitation plate.

This should be aboout the same as the height of the transom. That way, the cavitation plate will be even with the bottom of the boat.

http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=17;t=022180
