Evinrude to Johnson

Hey folks,

Its been a while since I've posted, but have a few questions..
I have a 1977 Monark fishing boat. It had a 1977 55 HP Evinrude motor on it. Long story short, I blew that motor up. I have since then taken the motor off of the boat and found one for sale. It's a 1975 Johnson 70 HP motor. The model number is 70ESL-75B. My question is will the Johnson fit on my boat just like the Evinrude did? Or will new holes have to be bored? Also, is the 1975 70 Hp motor a good motor and does anybody own one? Thanks a whole heap in advance!

If your 55 was a bolt-on motor, the pattern is the same. I have mixed feelings on the 70. On the one hand, they are excellent and economical motors with lots of power for their size & weight. On the other hand, don't you dare run it hot. Not even a little bit. Running them hot makes them ingest water into the cylinders, destroying the powerhead. If in good condition and properly treated, I would have no fear.
