Re: Evinrude Timing Tool

Is that the piston stop tool for indexing the timing pointer? If so our Snap On dealer had a similar tool on his truck last summer.Don't think it was Snap On,but an aftermarket unit.Around $12.00.

Difficult to know just what these numbers are for. The first part number is not a valid part. The second # is NLA, with no description. Piston Stop tool: carb models 384887- $50, DI models 342679 -$ 28. Avalable from your Bombardier dealer.

Here is an old listing of some "Timing Fixture Tool Kits" that was on Ebay. Item # 280041079921. Maybe seeing them will light some bulbs.

I ain't sure what these tools are for.....maybe a year and hp will help?

Both tools were discontinued in the middle 90's from BRP......

Re: Evinrude Timing Tool

Found #378966 in old special tools catalog. It is the two-pronged tool that goes on the crankshaft to set the breaker points on 28,33,40hp models 1962-up.

Jonarendt, if you really want one or are doing a lot of service work, go for it. Otherwise, you don't realy need one. Many thousands of those motors are running around just fine by merely setting the points at .020"

The tool is great if you do a lot of service work, though. Makes the job easy and quick.

Yep,just kick the prop until the points are open the widest and set to .020. The tool was nice but this works well also.

sorry I thought you wanted a piston stop

Now I know what he's talking about.....got three of the darn things hanging on the tool board....all for different hp's. Must have used them all of two or three times....

Yep, it is the fixture for setting the timing. tried setting the gap to .020 at widest point but motor still runs rough. not doing service work, just trying to tune up 1 motor, a 1963 40 HP evinrude.

Could have bought the entire set on ebay last fall, final bid was $110, but only need one. Service manual calls for 386635 but instructions with that set call for 378966, neither one of which are included in ebay listing #280041079921 (thanks for that though, hadn't seen it).

Re: Evinrude Timing Tool

Jon....why not tell us what you've done so far? New points, condensers, coils....etc. Have you done the carb?

Try and describe the way it runs.

You don't need the timing tool. You can use a timing lite on each plug wire and look at the same area of the points plate that is in the book where it describes using the tool. A mark on the flywheel should be inside the 2 marks on the plate.

If I remember right, there is a very small square mark on top of the points cam and that is the high spot for adjusting the points to .020",

On older well worn motors, where the crankshaft wobbles in the worn upper bearing, setting the points to .018" may help it run better.

Replaced points, plugs, wires. Rebuilt carb and confirmed gas flow. definitely misfiring. Will run at idle and full throttle, but runs rough.

Re: Evinrude Timing Tool

The timing tool won't help. If it is misfiring there is something wrong other than points setting unless you have them way off. How are the coils? Those old OMC motors are notorious for having bad coils. You can almost assume they are shot unless they have already been replaced. They have new ones right here at iboats.

Were new condensers included in the point replacement or no?

Re: Evinrude Timing Tool

if changing the condensers doesn't help, try replacing the coils. had a similar problem with a '76 35 hp. they're not cheap, but they're easy.

These timing pointers are nothing but a " dummy " flywheel.------You can use your flywheel to do the exact same job.----Just takes a little longer.
