I have a 1979 Evinrude 115, the tilt and trim recently started to bleed down after lifting. I have reasonable mechanical ability. Do I dare attempt rebuilding the t&t hydraulic system? Where do I start?

Also, where can I find the special tool used to remove the end caps?

Re: evinrude tilt and trim rebuild

I'm new to boating, but I did mine. First, spray Liguid Wrench or somesuch on the rod that goes thru the side plates and all the bolts. That was the hardest part, getting the rod out of the main cylinder. They sell a spanner for the end caps, but mine tapped around with a rounded off drift. Order a rebuild kit and buy a cheap tub that the T&T will fit in. It's a messy job. Take it apart, clean it good, and replace the rubber parts one at a time. Mine works like a new one, but took a while to bleed it all out when done. Good luck. I'm sure you'll get more expert advice here soon.

I'd recommend getting an OEM factory service manual to do this. There's excellent trouble shooting procedures in it. You can either have a bad tilt up relief valve in the unit or a bad manual relief valve.

Re: evinrude tilt and trim rebuild

Thanks for the reply.

I built a spanner wrench using some square tubing and some 3/8 bolts ground down to the diameter of the holes in the end caps. I pulled the end caps off of the trim rams and found the swiper rings on the port side piston were blown. I think this explains the settling after the unit is lifted. I also found dirt and crud build up on both the port and starboard side swiper rings, this explains the leaking around the push rods; I have replaced both of them.

Now I am just left with replacing the swiper rings on the pistons.
