Hi all

I have a 1978 Evinrude 115hp that the Tilt Trim valve body is screwed up. I have another that I want to put in, but as always I do not have all the right equipment, like an engine lift.

This engine has apparently the old style transom brackets that dont allow you, once the T&T is unbolted, to simply pull the unit out. My understanding is that I have to remove the mounting bolts from the port bracket so the bracket can be moved. I have done this. The engine right now is resting on the two starboard mounting bolts and a set of saw horses.

I cannot get the port bracket to swing up out of the way and I cannot get the bracket to move to the left any to allow me to pull the T&T unit out from between the transom brackets.

Anyone have any help they can give me, like what do I need to do to get this done and get the replacement installed?

All comments will be appreciated.

Thanks.

You first have to remove the steering arm, to allow the port bracket room to move to the left, allowing the tnt unit room out.

Re: Evinrude T&T Remove and Replace

I have disconnected the steering cable from the connecting arm that goes to the front of the engine.

The nut on the end of the steering tube that is on the outside of the port bracket is still on.

At this point the bracket wont move left but will swing about 2 inches up away from the transom.

It appears I have to remove that nut on the steering tube to get the brackett to be able to move.

The steering arm looks like it just connects to the bottom of the engine powerhead housing that the cowling sits on., and moves with the engine on the pivot.

Have I missed something there?

Remove that nut. Slide the port bracket to the left, but leave it on the transom, so that a chunk of wood can be used in between the leg and the brackets to hold the motor. It will slide enough to the left to get the TNT unit out, but that steering arm has to be completely disassembled.

Re: Evinrude T&T Remove and Replace

I think I have the picture now.

However, I might add that the transom bracket is on the transom with two bolts and is not "sitting" on the transom as if it had a C-Clamp on it holding it there. The motor is not resting at the moment on the port bracket and the only connection to the transom is on the starboard bracket's two mounting bolts.

Let me get that nut loose and slide it over. Cold weather coming tomorrow night so I want to get this finished if possible.

I will let you know how it goes.

Okay, old T&T are out, now to switch the motors, fill with fluid and hook it up to a battery, see if this used valve body unit works.

And in case I dont get the T&T back in this evening before the rain hits, I put the port bracket back and put the top bolt back in to give the engine some support again.

Thanks much for your help so far and hope I dont need anything else on this ordeal.
