Hi there I have a 1991 225 evinrude on the back of my ski centurion. but when I went to take it off the lift the starter was grinding. Now when i turn the key the gear pops up fine to turn but the shaft, that turns the gear is spinning inside of it. I took the whole thing apart thinking that there would be a key or something to hold it in place but nothing only thing i noticed was that there was some play in the shaft so im thinking of putting some more bushing washers in to hold it tighter and to have the gear hit the top so it can grip and spin.

let me know if you think this will work heres the link of the parts diagram for it. http://shop2.evinrude.com/Index.aspx?s1=ni4t5fets2kaokda0up1bpjv34&catalog_id=0&siteid=1

and yes its not the battery of cables going to it I checked both and there all good

Re: Evinrude starter!

Inspect the top of the shaft to check the grooves the bendix rides on arent gone/snapped off.

Re: Evinrude starter!

not really like a bearing.
Once you let go of the key after the motor had started the spring should push the bendix down as the starter slows.

While at the top of the shaft the grooves should mean it can only spin one way without moving the starter shaft. when it moves that way it will start travelling down those grooves, the other way it should turn the starter shaft, unless the grooves a broken or your bendix is unwell/worn
