Evinrude starter issues

I have a 1978 evinrude 70hp, 70873c, occasionally the starter will just spin and the drive gear won't engage. I have tapped on it with a wrench and it will then engage. Would this be the starter going bad or maybe just the bendix?

Try putting a little oil on the bendix shaft and see if that frees it up.

Could also be a stuck brush in the starter.
