evinrude proper voltage

I have new batteries and a new regulator. According to some of my previous posts and replies (Thanks to all) my stator is ok too. It puts out < 20 VAC and 9 amps at WOT. No loose magnets in flywheel either.
My voltmeter, however, continues to read 12.4V - 12.6V. Is this OK? Last year before changing the reg./rect. and batteries, it would normally read 14V or so. Some have said since the batteries are 12.4V they are not needing a charge so 12.4V is OK. I am skeptical. All connections have been cleaned. One fuse in motor is OK. Any ideas? I am Stumped!

Try the red Search at the top of the page while you are waiting for a post here. I would enter "battery voltage". My gut tells me that you should get a reading of around 13.5v even with a fully charged new battery but I am weak with electrical.

Re: evinrude proper voltage

I assume you are talking about a panel meter, which is typically conneted to a switched 12 v source. You clearly have a high resistance connection between the meter and the battery. Could be on the grd side or hot and might even be in the ign switch. I'm assuming since charging is OK, that the reading across battery terminals is ~ 13.5 at idle.

Panel voltmeters are typically not too good. Mine reads the same as yours, but used to read ~ .4 v high. I have an ammeter, which I trust. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

wildeone,
voltage across terminals at idle is 12.4v not 13.5

Re: evinrude proper voltage

12.4 VDC or < read across battery terminals w/ a good VOM is no good. You say the stator AC voltage is ~ 20 V at idle, which is fine.

You also say last year the DC voltage was 14 at the terminals, again this is fine. Why did you change the rectifier/regulator? Batteries will NOT read less than 13 VDC at idle, regardless of their state of charge.

The charging system on your motor is pretty simple: stator, flywheel, regulator/rectifier and battery plus wires. If you're sure the stator has ~ 20 VAC at idle, that only leaves the regulator/rectifier and wiring. Check all wires for continuity with ohmmeter ... you may have a broken/corroded wire from the regulator/rectifier to the battery or the regulator/rectifier has failed -again-? . Make sure to check the engine ground to battery also.

Re: evinrude proper voltage

Thanks for your interest. I bought the boat last year and overhauled the entire onboard electrical system. I think it is something on that end and not the motor now. I will try this: Disconnect all wiring. Wire just the pos. and neg. from the engine directly to one battery, w/o anything else connected to the battery. Then, I will check the voltage at the battery, hopefully it's ~13.5V or so. I will re-post results. (fingers are crossed, and maybe some wires too)

Kenny,12.4 is to low on the battery,a charged batery should read 12.5 to 12.6. Go out to your car or truck and check your metter on that battery, should be 12.5 or so. If it is my guess is that you have a battery that is pulling your voltage down, have seen it before on 9 amp system. loper

wildeone,
stator voltage at idle is not 20VAC it like ~>10VAC. Once I rev up it gets up to 20+VAC. Think it's bad?
