evinrude nightmare

1983 evinrude 150 crossflow
motor ran hot no damage to cyls .blew head gasket.
changed head gaskets exhaust gaskets and water pump . checked heads with strait edge and feeler gauge used new morse head gaskets. torgued
to specs . test ran engine after comp check. on muffs had good tell tell stream .hed gaskets are weeping water. form sides at gasket .the gaskets said no sealer. on head gasket now have water in cyls on right side .
am lost as what to do next. should i pull heads and send to machine shop or
replace gaskets and use sealer . the head gaskets had arrows that said to exhaust i put them with arrow pointing to ex cover all water ports matched up
any one with any sugg plese chime in ready to buy new motor .but dont like to give up thanks benny b

It is possible that the heads did warp. Take them to a machine shop and have them surfaced.

could have been flat cold, and warmed up. also could be wrong thickness gasket.

hey tashas dad warmed up motor retorqued head no visible leak on exterior
but still has a little water on top plug dont know if its from prior torqueing
should i run it and see if it clens up or should i pull right head and have surfaced, the head gaskets are from brp numbers for this motor .
if i have head surfaced do i run factory head gasket are will i have to run
a low comp gasket.
motor is running great but the water on the one plug is a problem
water on that cyl only means that the metal ring is not sealing correct

Make sure the bolt holes are clean at the bottoms or you won't be able to close tight enough. Bore brush in a hand drill will help.

ran a atp in all of the holes . im afraid that it may be warped . also wanted to know if i machine head will i be able to use another stock head gasket.

You will be fine with the stock head gasket.

Price on surfacing varies with where you are, but about $20 each is reasonable.

A head warped enough to leak would be quite rare in my experience. Did you have all, old gasket material removed from head, and deck of engine?

hey r johnson yes the surface areas were clean and i passed the head over

emery and glass lightly .the heads were clean and i used brp / morse head gaskets. no sealer / they were marked no sealer torgue in sequence . 20 22ft lbs they leaked a little around edges . on one side . the side that blew head gasket from over heat.melted poppett.i ran till warm .then retorqued and leak on outside stopped but seam to be getting small amont of water on top plug on that side.
at this point im wanting to know if i need to pull and have surfaced to be safe.replace with new gasket and im thinking about useing sealer anyway.
but for it to leak water it would have to be leaking. at metal seal i believe.
anyone feel free to step in need all the advice i can get

if you diside to take the heads of wich i would do,
and send the heads to machine shop, also check out the flatness of the block with straightedge and a feeler gauge.

I think you should be lightly coating the cylinder head gaskets and cylinder head covers with OMC Gasket Sealing Compound. Did you follow the specific sequence when tightening the cylinder bolts?

yes samo i ran it cold right after i put it back together it was a little lower
than it was before head gasket blew. but i shot some oil gas mix in that cyl
and it came back strong . but im going to run it again. its not sealing on that cyl because it has small amount of water on that cyl .i was wanting to know if i can pull that head and use some sealer on gasket . or possibly go to a thicker head gasket on that one side . but to be safe i should surface head
and use new gasket.the other side is fine its new also .

Torqued to specs? You didn't say exactly what the bolts were torqued to. Did you torque them to 18 to 20 foot pounds in the following sequence? If not, do so. Let us know what you find.

yes retorqued to 22ft pounds in sequence have very slight water intrusion do not no if it residueal or still leaking

well got good straight edge removed head and checked head i warped pretty good . am going to take and have surfaced . was wondering if i could use glass and emery cloth . i have all day .
what is the most you can get off with that process.
i didnt put a feeler gauge to it.but i can

Never cut those heads more than .010" and make sure they have not been cut before. Use good gaskets, BRP's are fine. Morse never made gaskets but you may be refering to Aqua Power gaskets since AP & Morse were sister companies at one time.

mr hadley im going to take them to a boat machinist do i need to tell him take no more than 010 off them they only do outboards i hope they know.
if 010 doesnt clean them up can i try a thicker head gasket say the one for
low comp they have a part number for one on brp. and if so can i use on one side . or do they sell after market for my motor that is thicker any help would be great. i should have . put a feller gauge under straitedge. to see if i am in ball park. i build lots of small and big block chev performance motor up to 775hp on pump gas but dont know a lot about outboard tollerances
are there any other heads that will work or a step up say the xp heads
are another higher comp head that will work if they do i assume the timeing would probaly need attention.
