I have an old Evinrude Lark VI motor that I don't know the year of. The guy I bought it from said it was a 35 hp. I need some info on getting it started. It had a lot of water in the system when I initially tried starting it. I added new spark plugs, new gas mix, and emptied all lines of water and gas. When I crank it, it putts a little, sounds like it wants to start then dies. Is there anything else I should do to get it started?

If you can get us a model number off the mounting clamp it will be easier to know where youre at.

Next, change the points and condensers, I ran into trouble running my '67 Lark IX just because of one bad point.

Your motor might be a 1964 40hp, if the "Lark VI" has anything to do with it. Another motor I have says "Lark VI" and the model number on the mount bracket (also stamped on the soft plug on top of the upper cylinder) matched up to 1964 40hp in my local marine shop's books.

Andrew:

1. Make sure you get a manual (after you get the model number off the motor to ensure you get the right one!).

2. Take AmigaDragon's advice, then you will also want to redo the water pump.

3. Then we can see where you're at and what's going on.

Good luck!

Re: Evinrude Lark VI year

Thanks for the advice, but it turns out that the gasket on my fuel float was missing. Replaced it and it started right up. It runs a little rough, smokes a lot and I have gas leaking off of the carberator. The specs on the motor cover call for a 24:1 ratio. Is all the smoke just par for the course with a ratio like that or is there something else wrong? Also, the leaking gas appears to be coming out of a hole just to the right of the low speed needle. It appears as if something is missing there. Should there be something there to stop this gas from leaking, and could anybody tell me what it is. Thanks.

I'm not sure right now, but I think that might be a vent for the float bowl. With the bowl off, can you blow easily in the hole and feel air at the top of the float chamber?. If so and it's dripping fuel, maybe you have a leaking float valve or saturated float.
